A tribute concert to Toru Takemitsu
On Dec.3, there will be a tribute concert to
late great composer Toru Takemitsu (wiki) at Orchard Hall in Shibuya, Tokyo.
Yoriko Douguchi
will join the concert as Paititi.
Presumably, they will play
Takemitsu's film score for Dodesukaden (Akira Kurosawa's) with other
musicians.
This concert is organized by Yoshihide Otomo and Naruyoshi
Kikuchi, both are the most prominent musicians of the contemporary music/
film music.

A CROWD OF THREE (KENTA
TO JUN TO KAYOCHAN NO KUNI), the latest film of Tatsushi Omori will be
released as DVD in Japan, January 19, 2011.
In this film, Yoriko Douguchi plays the
role of Yousuke's mother in . It's showing in Tokyo, Osaka and many other
cities of Japan.
In CROWD OF THREE, an intensely poignant and cruel
story of youth, Yoriko Douguchi gives a very strong impression in a small
episode.
Although it is an appearance of short duration, her gaze is
corkscrewing, and her performance is stunning and haunting, far from just
being ignored.

In
2007, Yoriko Douguchi debuted in a band, enhencing her career
further.
It's a ukulele band called Paititi, which features
primarily Douguchi and Hidenori Ishida.
With
several other musician friends, they play not only Hawaian music
but also an amalgam of various kinds of music,
influenced by
Reinhardt's virtuoso performances, Beatles' melodies, Weather
Report's funkiness, and more.
Paititi's music should be called
"crossover ukulele".

Tomoo
Haraguchi, one of the best-known special make-up artist, whose name is
familiar to Yoriko's fans as the director of Mikadoroid,
has been
working with Paititi to make a film about this ukulele namd (In fact, he

Paititi's fiirst motion picture is simply titled as
"Ukulele" with a subtitle 'Paititi the Movie'.

Yoriko Douguchi is
in Masanori Tominaga's "Pandora no Hako"
(Pandora's Box, 2009). She appears as the mother of Hibari (the
leading character).
Based on the same-titled novel by Osamu
Dazai, a prominent author of modern Japan ( wiki) and whose best-known work is "Ningen
Shikkaku"(No Longer Human),
Masanori Tominaga was also
acclaimed for his quirky and off-beat movie "Pabirion Sanshouuo"(Pavilion
Salamandre, 2006).
In 2008, while making "Pandora's Box", Tominaga
also directed a video clip (the clip for "Jigoku
Sensei" )
of a band named Soutaiseiriron
(The Theory of Relativity).
In this clip, Yoriko is starred as
the mysterious nurse with a cigarrette.
According to
Tominaga, he has been a fan of Yoriko Douguchi since he watched her in a
TV drama in 1990.
Moreover, Etsuko Yakushimaru (the chanteuse of Soutaiseiriron) is a young admirer of
Douguchi. She had a special session with Douguchi's ukulele band
Paititi at the YORIKO DOGUCHI FILM
FESTIVAL in 2009.

appear at Euro Space theater!
Yoriko Douguchi's latest film TECHNICOLOR is showing
for the MOMOMATSURI weeks of Euro Space, a movie
theater in Shibuya from March 13 to March 26.
MOMO-MATSURI is
a short-film festival by young and promising female
directors. TECHNICOLOR will start at 21:00 in every
evening of March 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17.
Yoriko will
attend a 'talk show' program with the participating directors on
March 16.
The entrance fee for one late show is 1,000
yen.

The first movie in

Yoriko Douguchi is coming to Osaka as one of the
3 members of the 6th Film Exhibition jury in Osaka from March 1
to March 3.
The rest of the jury are Koji Wakamatsu ( the Godfather of
pinku eiga. see Wiki. )
and Yoshihide Otomo (one of the most
important musicians of teh world's experimental music. see Wiki) .
This event is organized by CO2 (Cineastes
Organization Osaka Exhibition) which supports independent film makers of
Japan.
Yoriko will attend a discussion for a panel discussion with
Wakamatsu and the on March 3 (16:55~17:45).

KENTA TO JUN TO KAYO-CHAN NO
KUNI (A Crowd of Three), directed by Tatsushi Omori,
was screening and
won acclaim at the Tokyo Filmex Festival in 2009.
Omori is also known
as the director of GERUMANIUMU NO YORU (Whispering of the Gods, 2005),
his controversial debut film.
The short film is TECHNICOLOR,

The respondent "recently watched CHARISMA", presumably at
31e Festival
des 3 Continents, in Nantes.
Other than CHARISMA, she has ever
watched 4 of Yoriko's movies; TAMPOPO, CURE, LICENSE TO LIVE and
TOMIE.
Her favorite film directors are Mikio Naruse and Seijun
Suzuki. She watches about one Japanese film a
month.
When she first saw Yoriko in CURE, she had an
impression which was "she's absolutely beyond
words. she's cruel but fragile."
"Recently, I watched
Charisma and really liked Yoriko Douguchi as much as that movie.
She
reminds me a lot of European actresses like Anna Karina, but I have no
doubt that she can't be categorized.

On November 14, 2009, Kiyoshi
Kurosawa, the director of Yoriko's masterpieces such as
THE EXCITEMENT
OF THE DO-RE-MI-FA GIRL, DANGEROUS STORIES (2ND EPISODE: THEY ARE COMING
TO GET YOU TONIGHT),
THE GUARD FROM THE UNDERGROUND (Jigoku no
Keibiin), six episodes of SHOOT YOURSELF OR SUIT YOURSELF, CURE,
LICENSE TO LIVE and CHARISMA,
was invited to be present at Cinemavera
Shibuya for Yoriko Doguchi Film Festival, as a special (talk show)
guest.
He had a congenial chat with Yoriko about some episodes
from the backstage of DO-RE-MI-FA,
and on stage was also
Souzou Teruoka, who is a film critic now and appeared
as Teruoka-kun, a student with Brahms record in that movie.
It
was a pleasant evening for us to spend.
Many of us Yoriko's
fans do love Kurosawa's films and really wished them
to be in one frame of time.
A fan of the both later told me, "I was
almost crying !!!", and I really understood what he meant.
Here, I
report on this special event, extracting several interesting topics from
the evening.
@Kiyoshi Kurosawa
reminisced that his first
impression of Yoriko was unlike other
candidates.
"She obviously looked reluctant at the audition",
he looked back with a smile. (Hearing this remark of
Kurosawa, Yoriko and the audience burst into laugher.)
She didn't
put on a forced smile toward the audition judges including Kurosawa, and
it made a rather strong impression on him.
It was a venture
for a young director like Kurosawa to choose a non-actress like
Yoriko, but he made a bet on her.
@Souzou Teruoka
remembered that
Yoriko had already had such a star aura that could make her look
a little aloof .
He also said in jest, "I was afraid that I might be
making her angry someday and she'd give me a slap on the cheek!
"
Kiyoshi Kurosawa
talked
about the first of the whole shootings for DO-RE-MI-FA.
It
was a scene in which Yoriko walks across the campus.
At
first, for fear of Yoriko's lack of experience as an actress, Kurosawa
gave her a direction in detail, movement by movement.
It turned
out disappointing. She obvisouly seemed to be moving
along a director's guide, and ultimately looked
awkward.
To Kurosawa, the very first moment of Yoriko's acting
was not satisfactory at all.
He decided to change a method of
mise-en-scène from the first idea to a more sponteneous way of
letting her move as she wanted.
Suddenly, everything turned out
right. It was the birth of Yoriko Douguchi as an actress.
In an
interview footage of Tomo-o Haraguchi's latest movie UKULELE, PAITITI THE
MOVIE, a documentary of Douguchi's ukulele band,
Kurosawa
mentioned,
"Then I realized that
Douguchi-san had already been an actress before the shooting for
DO-RE-MI-FA started.
She was just not aware of it, but she
was already an actress."
Yoriko
Douguchi
reminisced about when she sang Brahm's lullaby at the
ending of DO-RE-MI-FA.
"I am not good at singing. I can't sing on key.
When I was hesitating to sing, Kurosawa-san came and told me, 'You
don't need to sing with a skill, but please sing with
confidence',
and I did it."

to tell you about a big film festival which is now taking place in Nantes,
France, from Nov. 24 to Dec.1.
It's 31e Festival
des 3 Continents (Asia, Africa and Latin America).
Among the non-competition
films to be screening, there is Masanori
Tominaga's "Pandora's Box" (see trailer @ youtube),
in which Yoriko Douguchi appears as the mother of
Hibari the protagonist.

Recently, we've linked to Midnight Eye, a real good English site for fans of
Japanese cinema.
Thank you very much for introducing this
festival!
We've already finished the scheduled 3
special events (see Special Event page).
Kishin Shinoyama's
"digi+KISHIN: Yoriko Doguchi" (assemblage of her nudity from
1983 to the present) is amazing.
It's showing on Nov.15 and
Nov. 20 (see Schedule page) as well.
I would go so far as to
say that it is an experience to see the (literally) naked Yoriko Doguchi
by Shinoyama on screen!
The Evening of Tominaga & Yakushimaru was
enchanting and as elusive as their films and music.
Well, actually,
Tominaga was too busy working on his new film to appear that
night.
Instead, he sent us a video-message which had just
been taken at a studio, to congratulate and apologize.
The video
ran more than 10 minutes long, and his speeches were very friendly
making the audiences smile.
Paititi's movie was exciting to watch their
live footages and inseterd interviews with Kiyoshi Kurosawa and
Kazuyuki Sekiguchi (Southern All Stars).

A two week long film festival to
celebrate the 25 years of Yoriko Douguchi's film career is to be held
at Cinemavera Shibuya, a movie theater in Tokyo, from November 7 to
November 20.

I'm excited because I
got a respond from Korea to the web-survey of this
site .
Let me introduce
his messages.
When he saw Yoriko Douguchi in "The Excitement of the
Do-Re-Mi-Fa Girl", he thought "She's pretty! Who is
she?"
His remarks follow;
"I say she's pretty but I think it is more
strange kind of pretty, I'm sorry my English is bad. I want to say she
isn't just pretty."
I
understand that! What you really mean comes across to

You're saying that her beauty is more
than skin deep, aren't you?

"Do-Re-Mi-Fa Musume no Chi wa Sawagu" (h~t@บฬอฎ The
Excitement of the Do-Re-Mi-Fa Girl) is Yoriko Douguchi's first
film.
In 1984, when Douguchi was 19, her life came
to its first turning point when she was starred in a major
role in a "roman poruno " (romantic porn)
film.
"Roman poruno" is a brand of sex-oriented films by
Nikkatsu, the oldest film production company in
Japan.
Most of them were low-budget films, featuring obscure young
and interesting actresses, actors and filmmakers.
Some of their
works won acclaim for their quality in the 70s in
particular.
Douguchi's debut film was directed by a young and
promising director named Kiyoshi Kurosawa (no relation to
Akira Kurosawa).
Its working title was "Joshidaisei
Hazukashi Zeminaaru" (A coed taking a seminar on
shyness).
Although Douguchi still had
some qualms about playing a major role in a
roman poruno film, she was also excited to work with young
and relaxed people
who were heavily influenced by Godard and
Nouvelle Vague as well.
Unfortunately, Nikkatsu, the film
company, refused to release the film, due to its not
being lascivious enough for a (softcore) porn film.
Despite
the efforts of Kurosawa and his supporters to purchase the film back
from Nikkatsu,some sexual sequences had to be cut from
the original version
to pass the censors as
a general (non-porn) movie.
Moreover, to make up for
the missing sequences, other new sequences needed
to be filmed.
In 1985, when Douguchi's debut film was
eventually shown, it had been reborn as a completely
new film,
"Doremifa Musume no Chi wa
Sawagu"(The Excitement of the Do-Re-Mi-Fa
Girl).

watch this movie, since this is not available as a video or DVD outside
Japan.

@"Pandora's Box" --
movie due Oct 10 in Japan
Yoriko Douguchi is in an upcoming
movie "Pandora no Hako" (phฬธ@Pandora's Box). She appears as
the mother of Hibari, the leading character.
Based on the
same-titled novel by Osamu Dazai (พษก), a prominent author of
modern Japan ( wiki) and whose best-known work is "Ningen
Shikkaku"
(lิธi@No Longer Human),
this movie is directed by
Masanori Tominaga (yiนh), who was acclaimed for his quirky and off-beat
movie "Pabirion Sanshouuo"
(prIRฃ Pavilion Salamandre) in 2006.
In 2008, while making "Pandora's Box", Tominaga also directed a
music video of Soutaiseiriron (ฮซ_@The Theory of Relativity), "the
Smiths meet lolita" like band which is increasingly popular

In
this clip, Yoriko is starred as the mysterious nurse with a
cigarrette. Check it out and be
enchanted.

I
received a friendly respond from Belgium to the
web-survey of this site .
He is a fan of film directors
like Kiyoshi Kurosawa (๒ด@wiki) and Shinya Tsukamoto (ห{W็@wiki), and likes watching contemporary Japanese
films.
According to his messages, he watched "Charisma" and "Cure"
in France, and it was the first time that he knew Yoriko
Douguchi.
"She's not like any of other Japanese
actresses. " was his first impression of
Yoriko.
To him, Yoriko Douguchi "has been a
mystery, since her biography and filmography were hard to find, and I
don't read Japanese. "
He questions, "Which role is she for in
Itami's Tampopo? I watched it long ago and liked it but didn't know she
was in there. "
Well, would you believe? She's the
pearl-diver girl who offers the raw oysters to the man in white, in
the seashore sequence.
I hope you'll watch that movie again and point
her out this time for sure !
